If You Choose Wrong…Make Another Choice

Recently I had a Medicare Advantage Client call me and state “I chose the wrong Medicare Advantage Plan”. That is not an uncommon thing to hear during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) which runs October 15th-December 7th every year. But, the best news is you do not have to panic. A fact most consumers do not know is the last plan you choose before December 7th is the plan you will have January 1st. If there were 15 Medicare Advantage Plans where you live and you chose to enroll in a different plan every 3 days, the plan you chose last is the plan you will have.

What does that mean for you?

Well, to put it simply, you have options. For instance if you chose a HMO which makes you have a Primary Care Physician (PCP) assigned to you and a very small network of Physicians and Hospitals. You also have to get a referral for every Specialist or test you need to have. You still have the option of signing up for a PPO which has a much broader network and you don’t have to get a referral for every little thing. Let’s say you need an MRI and you are on an HMO, first your PCP must order it and send it to the Insurance Company for approval. This could take weeks, literally. With an PPO the same PCP could order a test today and you could have it done today. No weeks to wait.

What are my choices?

You have a lot of choices available to you. You could switch Medicare Advantage Plans and stay with the same company. You could completely change to another company and a different plan. You could change back to Original Medicare Part A and B which you would need a Part D Plan for your medications. You could switch back to Original Medicare with Part D and the always preferred Medicare Supplement if you can pass some health questions. The sky is the limit.

How do I know what to choose?
